Medical experts agree Breast is Best, but US policy and attitudes don't allow a working woman to take extended maternal leave after the birth of a child. Nor is onsite daycare available for the vast majority of women. So American women by the thousands go back to work, leaving their newborns in daycare while also striving to do what the doctor recommends and breastfeed for at least the first several months of the infant's life. Which means pumping their breasts several times a day in a company-provided lactation room, or, more often, the bathroom. What's most striking is the underlying assumption that providing lactation rooms is the best that business and government can do for working mothers and their children.
