A team of organizations has produced a set of recommendations for dealing with e-waste in the African continent.
E-waste comprises the growing quantities of electronic products and materials that are disposed of by businesses and consumers every day. It is feared that in Africa growth in consumption of electronic goods is not being matched by adequate processes ensuring human safety and environmental health.
The team, which committed to work together on the problem in July 2007, includes the Global Digital Solidarity Fund, the Swiss Institute for Material Science (Empa) and Hewlett-Packard (HP).
Although they have arrived at a set of recommendations applicable to the region, the team emphasises that solutions need to be found on a country-by-country basis.
