Yesterday we learned that watching TV will not make your baby an Einstein; today we learn that watching TV could make you a lush...
As one who enjoys a good Cotes du Rhone now and then, I'm sure I'm every bit as susceptible to this phenomenon as anyone. A recent study in the Netherlands finds that when people watch TV programs or films that feature alcohol consumption, they tend to imbibe more themselves. No surprise there; just further proof of how suggestible and social we really are. I for one remember coming out of the cinema after seeing the film "Sideways," which is set in Pinot Noir country in California, and having a teensy hankering for a glass myself.
The real interest in the study lies in its implications for younger viewers. It might be good for parents to keep the suggestibility factor in mind when thinking about their children's viewing. It might also be desirable for socially responsible TV programmers to consider when to allow commercials for alcohol to air.
