Remember Burger King's old slogan, "Have It Your Way?" Looks like the auto industry's about to recycle it. Industry insiders are worried that President Obama's interest in aggressively curbing emissions with new industry standards means the end of consumer choice, as it effectively eliminates most trucks and SUVs as they're currently manufactured.
From NY Times: "“I want clean air and clean water just like the next guy,” said Erich Merkle, an independent automotive analyst in Grand Rapids, Mich. “But in the real world, there would be consumer outrage with the fact that they’re limited to maybe two vehicles and there’s nothing there that would meet their family’s needs.”"
Merkle's argument could be called the Real-World Bully argument: "Sure, nobody wants to destroy life as we know it, but since there are no viable alternatives AT THIS MOMENT, we have to be realistic and accept the status quo. Do you have a better alternative ready to go RIGHT NOW? No? Then simmer down, you eco-hysteric."
